CALYPSO IN KYTHNOS
17/06/2026
Little Kalypso has started her travels! In recent days, she has been spotted on several beaches around Kythnos, where she comes ashore to rest.
It is very important that you do not approach her, do not pour water on her, do not feed her, and keep children and pets away from her. In case you run into her in the sea, do not swim or engage in playful activities with her!
If you are lucky enough to encounter her and have photos or videos (always taken from a distance), you can send them to info@mom.gr or through our Facebook page.
MOm has contacted the island’s Port Authorities, as well as lifeguards at the busiest beaches, to ensure they are informed in case the young seal appears.
We would also like to inform the public that got worried about her status, Kalypso carries a satellite transmitter on her back, as she is a seal pup that went through MOm’s Rehabilitation Program. This allows us to monitor her movements during her first months back in the wild. Her movements and behavior is absolutely normal, she dives up to 100 meters and then returns to shore to rest. When she sheds her fur, the transmitter will fall off on its own.
MOm’s Rescue & Rehabilitation activities benefit from the support of the Monk Seal Alliance for 2026
