NEW PUP IN THE REHABILITATION CENTER
15/09/2024
As it turns out, the first alarm for 2024 sounded the day before yesterday from western Mani, as a newborn pup was spotted by citizens struggling with the waves among the rocks of the coast near the village of Agios Dimitrios. Just before darkness fell, the animal wandered off into the sea and disappeared. The next day, it was spotted having been swept away by the weather 6 nautical miles to the south while trying to get out to a small concrete dock. It was now clear that the newborn pup was lost and we had to intervene to give her a chance of survival.
The newborn female pup was urgently transported to the Monk Seal Rehabilitation Center of MOm in Spata at the site provided by the Attica Zoological Park where she was examined by the veterinarian in charge, Prof. Anastasia Komninou, and the first tests were carried out. The general state of her health gives us hope for her survival although she is still in critical condition, like any animal whose lactation from its mother is abruptly interrupted.
We would like to thank the website Mani Traveler Greece for the correct information and guidance of citizens, the Toulipa Goulimi Association and especially Mrs. Maria Aroni who rushed to the spot to give first aid as well as 15-year-old Konstantinos Gateas, a resident of the area, without whose contribution the little seal would not have been rescued in time. The fight for the survival of little Konstantina and her return to her natural environment has just begun!
